Apollos 15 Metro Astros 2
Kyle Spangler continued to lead the way for the Apollos going 5-5 at the plate with 4 rbi's a double and a home run. Kyle also pitched the final two innings striking out 5 to win team MVP Honors. Ryan Rivera had his first home run for the Apollos and Bob Pfaff contributed with two hits. Josh Krikstan also pitched three innings allowing just one run.
Playoffs Game 12 Winners Bracket Championship Apollos 8 Metro Astros 3 It was Kyle Spangler Bobblehead day at Westbury High School as Kyle Spangler went 3-4 with 2 home runs, 1 double and 4 rbi's. Then Kyle got on the mound in the 7th inning and struck out 7 batters in the final three innings to give the Apollos an 8-3 win over the Metro Astros. Tim Brown also was a major contributor with 2 key hits and 2 rbis. Ryan Riva also had two hits and had the other rbi. Mike Wilson started the game and went six strong innings striking out 4 and only walking 1. He got into problems in the 3rd inning with two outs and no one on, the lead hitter singled, the 2 hole hitter singled and the three hole hitter homered leaving the game Apollos 4 and AStros 3. The Apollos would answer in the bottom frame with Kyle Spanglers lead off homer and scored 4 runs in the inning to put the game out of hand...Steven Alexander continued his hot hitting getting a key rbi single, Anthony Covent also had an rbi single.
Game 11 Playoff Game 1 Apollos 6 KL Shockers 4
The Apollos opened the playoffs and really struggled with the bats. The Shockers took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the 4th when the Apollos finally got going an Andrew Dunn single, Mike Wilson walked, Kyle Spangler single, Manny Lujan Single and Anthony Covent ground ball that was booted, left 4-3. In the bottom of the 6th the Apollos got a Tommy Denson strikout followed by a Mike Tellez single and Steve Alexander walk. Andrew Dunn flew out to center but Bob Pfaff blooped a ball in that proved to be the difference in the game tieing the game at 4-4 and leaving Mike Wilson at the plate would doubled home the winning runs to leave the score at 6-4, Neither team would score again. In the top of the 9th the Shockers lead off with a double, then drew a walk, the next hitter hit into what should have been a double play ball but Manny Lujan kicked the ball, he then tagged the runner who over ran the base. Leaving one out and runners on the corners, the Shockers attempted to steal but their runner was thrown out by Bob Pfaff. The final hitter grounded to the pitcher to end the game. Mike Wilson started going 5 innings allowing 4 runs striking out 5. Kyle Spangler come on and pitched the final 4 innings not allowing a run and striking out 1.
Game 10 Apollos 18 Katy Braves 1 Bob Pfaff went 3-3 including a 3 run homer to lead the Apollos along with Kyle Spangler, Mike Wilson and Anthony Covent who all had 3 hits and multiple rbi's to lead the Apollos in a 10 run 4th inning against the Braves. Mike Wilson started and pitched 4 innings of shutout no-hit baseball. Alex Dutka pitched one inning allowing one run and Scuba Steve Alexander pitched two innings allowing 0 hits and striking out 5. The Apollos finished the HMABL Regular season at 8-0.
Game 9 Apollos 5 Metro Astros 1 The Apollos took a month off from playing with all of the rain and their tournament in Birmingham but returned to face the Metro Astros who appear to be their only opponent. The game was at Westbury with wind blowing in hard from Right Field. Mike MacLaughlin took the mound for the Apollos and pitched 5-1/3 innings allowing 1 run while striking out 7. Scuba Steve came on for the save and pitched 1-2/3 innings only allowing an inherited run. The Apollos really struggled offensively missing Mike Wilson, Kyle Spangler, Bob Pfaff and Anthony Covent there was no high scoring fire power they have been accustomed to.
Andrew Dunn had two hits, two rbis, Tommy Denson had two hits, Josh Krikstan had one rbi and a solid line drive out. The Apollos scored three runs in the bottom of the 4th. Mike Mac hit a ball to the shortstop that he threw away which could have ended the inning, instead Andrew Dunn singled home two runs and Tim Brown hit a line drive right at the first baseman to end the inning. The Apollos offense will improve.
Game 8 Apollos 6 Metro Astros 5
It was Josh Krikstan night at Bayland Kyle Chapman he started the game throwing 4 innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits before being removed in the 5th. He was re entered in the 6th to get two outs strikeouts with the bases loaded and pitched a scoreless 7th for the win. He also drove in the winning run with a groundout.
The Astros had a 1-0 lead going into the 5th, when they got back to back to back singles off Krikstan, he was removed and Scuba Steve came on to get three big outs in a row ending a threat leaving the score 2-0 Astros. The Apollos struggled badly in the lights of Bayland Kyle Chapman getting just one hit through 4 innings and being shutout. That changed in the 5th with Tommy Denson lead off walk, courtesy runner Tim Brown stealing 2nd and 3rd. Chris Schmidt singled in Brown then stole 2nd. Then Karl Johnson and Andrew Dunn walked. Bob Pfaff singled in two runs. Manny Lujan walked and with the bases loaded Anthony Covent doubled in gap clearing the bases, Manny Lujan fell down on his way to home plate to be throw out. But the Apollos took a 5-2 lead. Sonny Terrazas entered the game but only got one out pitching to six batters. Two errors were made but Terrazas was removed and Krikstan was re-entered with a tie game and men on 2nd and 3rd. Krikstan somehow got a strikeout, then intentionally walked the Astros 4 hitter to load the bases and struck him out, leaving the Astros stranded with the bases loaded. In the bottom of the 6th Tim Brown walked stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, then scored on Josh Krikstan's ground ball to win the game for the Apollos. Krikstan pitched the final inning getting three pop ups to end the game. The Apollos were out hit 9 to 4 and made errors but still managed to win this game somehow.
Game 7 Apollos 17 Mets 1 The Apollos were lead by Tim Brown and Anthony Covent who each went 4-4. Tim Brown hit a bases clearing triple with two outs in the first inning and also hit a double in the 5th inning, driving in a total of 6 runs. Anthony Covent continued his hot hitting going 4-4 with three doubles and a stolen base. Neither Brown nor Covent got a ball hit to them in the outfield. Mike MacLaughlin started for the Apollos throwing three innings not allowing a run or a walk but going deep into counts with many batters, he struck out 5. Justin Loftin pitched a scoreless inning, Mike Wilson pitched two scoreless innings striking out 4. Sonny Terrazas pitched one inning striking out the side but giving up an unearned run.
Game 6 Apollos 7 Metro Astros 6
Kyle Spangler went 2-3 with a double and 3 rbi's and closed the game out in the 7th to help the Apollos beat the Astros. Anthony Covent also doubled for the Apollos. The Apollos walked six times.
The Apollos offensive continues to struggle under the low candlelight lights on Bayland Kyle Chapman but the Apollos were solid fundamentally to beat the Astros who out hit the Apollos. Mike MacGauglin started and threw three innings, he was hammered in the first allowing 3 runs on three hits, but settled in to retire the side in both the 2nd and 3rd. Matt Evelt pitched two innings allowing one run despite walking 3. Stephen Alexander pitched to three batters allowing a single a homer and a walk before being removed for Justin Loftin. Loftin pitched a three up three down 6th. Kyle Spangler came on to end the game in the 7th, despite walking two batters he didn't allow a run and struck out two batters.
Game 5 Apollos 9 KL Shockers 1
The Apollos entered the game needing to save pitching to use their ace pitchers in hopes of resting them for Sunday's Liga Iberra Playoff Game.
Justin Loftin started and pitched 5 scoreless innings getting out of jams. Josh Krikstan pitched two scoreless innings despite giving a homer the umpire called foul. Scuba Steve pitched two scoreless innings without a sign on problem. Andrew Dunn pitched the 10th and allowed a run.
This game was actually 10 innings and neither team noticed. Kyle Spangler and Bob Pfaff homered, Andrew Dunn doubled and got 3 hits. Steven Alexander recorded his first career hit with a metal bat.
Game 4 Apollos 6 KL shockers 5
The Apollos and Shockers played under the low power lights on Bayland Kyle Chapman the game was low scoring until the Shockers scored in the 3rd inning. The Apollos lead off the bottom of the 4th by scoring 5 runs and back to back hits by Dunn, Wilson, Brown, Covent (walk), and a Karl Johnson Home Run. The Shockers scored 3 runs off Matt Evelt in the 5th and one off Justin Loftin in the 6th to tie the game. Kevin Cosgriff doubled in the top of the 7th and scored on a sac bunt to give the Apollos a 6-5 lead. Mike Wilson relieve Justin Lofton to pitch two innings striking out 4 for the win. Mike MacLauglin started and went three innings, Scuba Steve went one inning, Evelt went one inning, Justin Loftin threw to two batters striking one out only for the catcher to drop the ball and Wilson finished off the game. The Apollos made 7 errors in the infield on the most basic routine plays and still managed to escape with a win.
Game 3 Apollos 13 Kingwood College 2
Justin Loftin struck out 7 batters in 4 innings to hold off Kingwood College. Scuba Steve returned to the Apollos after a 3 year absence to pitch two scoreless innings. Anthony Covent finished the day with 5 hits, Kyle Spangler hit the day's only home run. Manny Lujan walked 5 times in the DH and Andrew Dunn walked 4 times. Justin Ard failed to get a hit in the double header.
Game 2 Kingwood College 6 Apollos 2
Sonny Terrazas struggles continued as he allowed three runs in the first inning and would last just 3-2/3 innings before walking 7 and allowing 5 runs and 5 hits. Sonny also went 0-3 with 2 k's as a hitter. He is continuing to work and expected to be better. Josh Krikstan was signed before the game and pitched the final 2-1/3 inning allowing a home run. Manny Lujan and Josh Krikstan made critcal and costly outs on the bases and Tim Brown had three strikeouts.
Game 1 Apollos 18 Mets 1
The Apollos opened the HMABL season on a cold Monday Night at Clemens Park against the Mets with the mission of letting all pitchers throw 1-2 innings. This was accomplished as Mike Wilson threw two innings, Justin Loftin threw two innings, Matt Evelt threw one inning and Alex Dutka threw one inning, Kyle Spangler was in the bullpen as time expired. Spangler lead the way with his bat going 4-4 with three doubles. Manny Lujan homered and Jordan Puscar had a single and three walks. The Apollos only allowed two hits (Justin Loftin) and one run (Jordan Puscar dropped a ball that hit him in the chest). The next HMABL game isn't until two weeks away.
